How to: Save at the supermarket

Many supermarkets plan their in-house baking for the busiest hours of the day to entice shoppers by the scents of fresh bread and pies. Not shopping during peak times will help you avoid the temptation of buying treats that are not on your weekly shopping list, says wellness guru Eric Plasker, author of "The 100-Year-Lifestyle" (Adams Media, $19.95).

Plasker's other tips on avoiding the maze of strategically placed unhealthy and unneeded items include:

Bypass unhealthy bargains: Most of the time buy-one-get-one-free deals are on items you don't need. Who really needs 4 packs of chocolate-chip cookies for the price of 3?

Skip seasonal displays: Holiday displays focus on indulgence items.

Teach children how to read labels: Look for the cheapest and most healthful versions of whatever it is you need. Make it a game for the children to find the healthiest food, rather than the most colorful or sweet.
