Kicking Tires: Wi-Fi signals could lead to car break-ins; CARS.COM AFFILIATE

The next time you leave your laptop, iPhone or iPad in your car, you might want to take the time to turn off the Wi-Fi.

According to the mobile security software company Credant Technologies, devices that use Wi-Fi (especially laptops) can take up to 30 minutes before going into "sleep" mode. During that time, thieves can detect them by searching for the signal using a specialized scanner that costs only about $50.

Recently in Jamaica, a group trying to scam the lottery was found to be using laptops stolen in just this fashion.

While it may seem unlikely that your vehicle could become a target because of an open laptop, it may be prudent to make sure the Wi-Fi signal is shut off before leaving your car for long periods of time.
