New favorite; Audi's R8 turns heads, makes a scene, performs impeccably

"What's your favorite car?" My stock answer at social gatherings has been the 1995 Buick Roadmaster station wagon. All that has changed. The drive. Since the R8's debut, there have been critics for whom the 4.2-liter V-8's 420 horsepower and zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds just wasn't enough.

Ask Cars.com: Shifter on center dash mimics column-mounted style

Q: Which small or midsize SUVs have a column-mounted shifter? A: The old-fashioned column shifter is pretty much a thing of the past in this segment. * Honda CR-V * Honda Element * Jeep Compass * Jeep Patriot * Honda Pilot * Toyota Venza. Some find it easier to pull down on the gear selector instead of pulling back, like it would on a floor-mounted shifter. © 2010, Cars.com.

Ask Cars.com: Outback edges part-time all-wheel drive vehicle

Q: I live in snow country. A: In more-than-mild snowy conditions, the Outback should have an edge, thanks to its always engaged all-wheel-drive system, plus its additional ground clearance. The CR-V's all-wheel drive sends power to the rear wheels only when front-wheel slippage is detected.

Ask Cars.com: Toyota's financing incentives may be extended

Q: Will Toyota continue zero-percent financing in August? A: Toyota's current incentives ended Aug. 2, and the automaker hasn't tipped its hand as to what happens after that, but it's a good bet to expect zero-percent financing to continue into August. Toyota still has some catching up to do in its 2010 sales performance.

Full-size trucks are a chore to drive in the city -- we know; we've done it -- so we wanted to see how Nissan's midsize Frontier would handle an urban environment, as well as a junkyard run to get some used parts.

A sluggish economy and an overall increase in the fuel efficiency of the U.S. vehicle fleet have reduced demand for gasoline to levels not seen since June 2004, according to the American Petroleum Institute. In June, the United States needed 9.18 million barrels of gasoline per day, 0.5 percent lower than a year ago, the group said. Energy demand is also a good barometer of economic health.
