espalier tree grafting method

Robert Crum, of Eagle, Idaho, wanted to plant fruit trees using the espalier method, which allows tree limbs to grow only along support cables on a single plane, and theoretically improves the fruit yield. But the real advantage is the trees take very little space especially when grown flat against a wall in a tight corridor. (Darin Oswald/Idaho Statesman/MCT)
